The Brief

Österreich Werbung. A tourism campaign built around three protagonists, multiple animation worlds, and one central metaphor: the synapse — the moment a connection fires between two things that were separate before.

The brief wasn't to make Austria look beautiful. It was to make it feel like something you carry with you. Burnt into memory.

Three Visual Worlds, One Emotional Architecture

Each protagonist gets their own animation universe. The couple moves through an underwater anime world and a psychedelic fusion dimension inspired by Hundertwasser. The child enters an adventure-fantasy realm — Digimon meets Austrian folklore: Wolpertinger, Tatzelwurm, Basilisk, reimagined as companions, not monsters.

These aren't decorative inserts. Each animation world is the emotional interior of its protagonist — what their brain actually generates when Austria fires its signal.

AI · 01 — The Horse

The cyclist's interior isn't a place. It's an animal.

A horse — generated. Not filmed, not rigged. Chrome and oxblood, a liquid-metal body that catches light like wet glass, galloping across a mountainside flipped into infrared: pink grass, cold sky, an Austria you know by shape but not by colour.

There was no plate to shoot and no model to rig — the motion, the surface, the impossible material all come out of generative video in one pass. Then the horse goes through the same DFD layer as the rest of the film, so the grain sits on the chrome the same way it sits on skin. Not a mascot — what the body produces when the climb stops being effort and turns into momentum.

AI · 02 — The Synapse

The synapse is the whole concept made literal. Two neuron terminals, almost touching, and the instant a charge jumps the gap.

Generated as liquid glass — translucent, iridescent, suspended in a field of firing neural tissue. At the moment of contact, light ignites in the gap and the Austria logo resolves inside it.

This is the one image the campaign couldn't have shot or licensed: a medically plausible synapse, art-directed down to the colour of the spark, animated to fire on a frame-exact beat. The metaphor and the method are the same thing — a connection firing between two things that were separate before.

AI · 03 — The Fill Shots

This is where AI did the quiet work. A film like this needs connective tissue — a macro of water breaking, a texture of brain matter, a burst of cosmic light. The shots that carry rhythm between the hero moments.

Normally you license these as stock and take whatever the library has: whatever look, whatever grade, whatever camera shot it. Instead, every fill shot was generated to spec — exact subject, exact motion, exact palette — built to match the world it sits next to instead of approximated from a catalogue.

One shot in that rhythm isn't synthetic: the woman diving into the lake is real footage, shot on camera — the single human body the generated tissue is built around.

And a Muybridge motion study — the oldest moving image of a horse there is — to close the horse sequence: scanned off a CRT, printed on film, two centuries of the moving image landing on one frame. No stock. No mismatched grade. No "close enough."

Fill shots generated to spec · matched, not licensed

The DFD Concept — Digital · Film · Digital

In IIBHFAD, the CRT monitor was the bridge: digital material forced through real, decaying hardware to become "real" again. The Austrian Synapse takes that logic further.

The DFD workflow exposes the finished digital footage onto actual analog film stock, develops it, then re-digitizes. Not a filter. Not an effect. A physical process — grain, colour shift, minor artifacts, the kind of texture that comes from chemistry, not code. Every visual world passes through the same analog layer. That shared physical imperfection becomes the connective tissue between them.

The CRT gave IIBHFAD its authenticity. The DFD gives The Austrian Synapse its unity. Digital material has to earn its reality by passing through something physical — and the detour through analog hardware is not a stylistic choice, it's an argument: that everything you experienced could have been real.

The Ending

No voiceover. Deliberately. Without a narrator explaining the journey, there's only image, rhythm, and cut. A synapse fully connected. A flash of light. Fade out.

The film doesn't tell you Austria is worth experiencing. It wires the experience directly into your nervous system — and lets the signal do the work.
